there was something kind of cool about not having everything you ever said indexed and searchable for all time. irc without a bouncer (i never ran a bouncer until late) felt very much like you were either present at the party, or you missed it. you'd learn about stuff through lore and handed down stories and quotes that people half-remembered and not just be able to scroll back and figure everything out. there was a neat authenticity to it. there's also something to be said about how its overall complexity and inaccessibility to folks who weren't dedicated to learning about it kept it really weird. it's still very weird. another thing i appreciate. I think the issue is whether the fleeting nature is 'the point' or not. IRC is fleeting, but it's the nature of the beast. Social media is fleeting, but it feels as if it shouldn't be.

Social media is fleeting, but it feels as if it shouldn't be. i'm not sure i ever said it was 'the point,' more that it led to a sort of conversation and a style of relationship building that i think is more healthy. if you made a joke, you made it for the people there and not in hopes that it would catch on and last forever. it felt like having beers with friends, or i guess more accurately a few friends, a few people you don't know well and one guy you absolutely hated but didn't want to start anything with.

For me, it was Second Life, FA, DA, and Steam. I quit using DA when it enshittified in the late 2010s though. I'm not old enough for some of the other tech like furrymuck, but I did come of age while artists still had their own independent websites.
I also hung out and lurked quite a bit on IRC. I'd love to be able to do that again.

i was online just at the tail end of the older era, i think, so bearing that in mind ... i miss all the damn petsites that used to be around LOL like! ugh! dragonadopters was my first one and so dear to me. i know a lot of the heavy hitters are still around, like chickensmoothie and gpx+ and dragcave, and flight rising has made itself a staple... but i still mourn smaller ones, like unicreatures... i was obsessed with them! Are you familiar with PixPet? I bet that would be right up your alley! I played around a bit on it a couple years ago but got kind of busy and fell out of the habit of checking it. It's really cute, though.

I first started fooling around on YouTube back in 2008 or so (I was 12), and the crazy shit you would just stumble across back then. The amount of Obama-antichrist and NWO/Disney subliminal messages rants I think is what got me into conspiracy theories. I miss those days. I can't stand 99% of the internetz now.

Wolf Quest was my shit when I was younger! I used to put HOURS into that game. I was also into Feral Heart if anyone even remembers that lol. FERAL HEART! I spent more time in its predecessor Impressive Title, though. I had a lioness character with a pet okapi and a wolf with a pet eagle. I remember making maps for Impressive Title was really... weird? You'd make a flat, grayscale height map (the whiter, the higher the elevation and the darker the lower) and it would somehow generate a 3D map out of it. I made a cave den once for some RP that never took off. I have some artwork of my old characters somewhere...
edit: FOUND THEM! 2009 ohhh my god. photoshop elements ass. i'm dying a little And I also found this single screenshot WOW yes impressive title! i wish i still had the old screenshots of my characters, i never thought to hold onto stuff like that back then. i still like to log onto some of the revival servers and explore old maps for nostalgia's sake.

i mostly lurked VCL, DA and Transfur a ton. sadly i never got involved in the fandom early on, even though i knew about it but i was just in complete denial, and i'll always regret it.... TwT TF art still is basically the core thing around which all my other art likes revolve
outside of furry sites i mostly hung around on sprite comic and pixel art forums. remember like... bob & george?? LMAO i was on the bob & george forum, i was on the planet zebeth forum, i was on yoyogames forums and on the spriters resource forums

This forum gives me such nostalgia vibes, thank you so much creeps for creating it! I used to spend hours on a Warrior Cats forum, around 18 years ago (yikes!). I've got a fun story actually, I was sent to a summer camp by my parents, met an older girl there from a different country and it turned out that both of us were active on this same Warrior Cats forum! Ik nowadays they are pretty popular but it felt so niche back then, it was crazy. We ended up being friends and visited each other a couple of times :3

When it comes to fond memories of the internet? Forums in general - I would say. Grew up on pre-moderated forums (The BBC over here had one for kids I spent a decent chunk of the early 2000s on), moved onto places like serebiinetforums et al. Was probably an annoying kid there, mostly, but was always a great place to find fellow fans of things. Was a tad obsessed with Sonic (specifically Shadow the Hedgehog), which really led me into both doing art and into furry circles eventually.
Some of the magic of the internet to me back then was that asynchronous style of communication - there was always something special about it to me that really caught my interest. Glad to have a new place to sort of offer that feeling again!

People still do play furcadia, and I'm one of them
It feels weird that I've had this program on my computer for twenty years now. Like more than half my life. Like world of Warcraft.
But Gaia online was it. That was the best. First place I've ever got banned from for using white text and trolling.
Also playing flash games on newsgrounds. The best stuff.

Okay, this thread is killing me. If my heart clenches any tighter it's going to stop entirely, and it will be on your heads! (And I'll thank you for it.) I keep trying to toss my two cents into this just to have someone else's post remind me of things I haven't heard mentioned in years, and I want to cry. I started lurking around forums ~1996 or so, starting with a Lion King forum that I'm about 80% sure was just titled "The Lion King Forum." (Three guesses what clenched my entry into the fandom, and the first two don't count.) Links from that led me to old-school DeviantArt, FurRing (or something like that; a link-aggregator for furry websites before Google became a power-house), and onto a pair of forums named "Wild Fury" and "Born Wild." Those two places, right there, are why I have grieved the loss of forums ever since. There was community there. Not like that word gets used now (it's been kind of dirtied, in my opinion), but a place where, after you've been there for a couple of weeks, you start to get a feel for who the regulars are, and which ones you can really rub elbows with, and which ones will probably rub you the wrong way, deliberately or not. But you're still all there together, like a virtual neighborhood. It's not one specific memory, but that sense of a place. I haven't felt like part of a community since they shut down somewhere around 2005 or 2006. That's probably why this place is hitting so hard for me. It's not that yet, but it's bringing back all those memories, and getting my hopes up. Here's to looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

But you're still all there together, like a virtual neighborhood. My question, as someone who has never used forums (until the last like two months when I discovered chickensmoothie for the first time and all I've said so far is "bump"), is that what this is? Like, a discord server in a different format? I've struggled so much in my life with this, I don't really understand how to get closer to people online. I join a server, I'm active for a bit and then it fades. How do you- dig yourself in and stay there? I've made a handful of irl friends over the years in different places but I'm so tired of being alone with my more niche/furry/etc interests, I want to try to get involved and invested This for me has been especially hard bc of my interest in 18+ stuff, like, I don't know what I'm doing here- I clicked a link on twitter bc I've always been curious about the idea of forums. but there's no discussion of 18+ stuff here and so maybe this isn't the right place for me to try to make friends ^^' Is this too off topic? Is it okay to reply like this? Idk what I'm doing sorry ^^'
