I was unfortunate to be born at a time when forum boards were dying out, but I remember something like finding TGWeaver's RubyQuest via youtube let's read, later reading for myself NanQuest. I also remember some webcomics like House Pets!, VG Cats, and some webcomics where the characters design was based off sonic.

i think most of the forum stuff i did was Well before i realised i was a furry, but was probably a good indicator of myself in the future - the legend of spyro RP threads in 2008 on neoseeker. i can't remember the exact storyline of the RP but can remember my character/username & and also that it was around the time that let it rock by kevin rudolf ft lil wayne came out cus i listened to that on Repeat whilst writing my replies. i also played a lot of wolfquest and i ended up getting it again recently along with wolfquest 2, it's like Pure Nostalgia to me

The first forums I participated in were mostly fanmade ones dedicated to pet sims and MMOs. I especially loved Webkinz. Was in the Clubhouse all the time talking to other players. Also used Deviantart forums a lot and I'm nostalgic for the old DA in general. If anyone remembers the old Smosh website, I probably commented on every post that was uploaded from 2010-2012 haha.
I feel what people have said about social media so far. I made the biggest social media cut I've done this year and haven't looked back. There's a few sites I'm trying to detach myself from, but I've made big progress otherwise. I'd love to see a mainstream resurgence in forums and I'm very happy to have found a furry forum like this! Hoping for its success

So might be dating myself a bit here… my family subscribed to AOL 3.0 back in 94-95, and I’ve been online ever since (I was 7!)
I found furry in 99 as a community through a how-to-draw tutorial somewhere online; the tutorial had a cat lady and how to draw her! I’d always loved anthros since I was a kid. There was a link at the bottom of the page for something called Furcadia! And that was my jam for decades. I used to play on either my dad’s Win98 powerful (for the time lol) PC or my mom’s ancient HP Pavilion that ran Win95. They were divorced and Furc helped me escape that fairly traumatic time and find community. I miss the isometric pixel-art art style and .midi tunes.
We used to mainly have yerf!, VCL and Furnation. It was very early 00s vibes and I miss that aesthetic. I’m so grateful this forum is here because I lived on forums like this for so many parts of my younger life!

Wolf Quest was my shit when I was younger! I used to put HOURS into that game. I was also into Feral Heart if anyone even remembers that lol. FERAL HEART! I spent more time in its predecessor Impressive Title, though. I had a lioness character with a pet okapi and a wolf with a pet eagle. I remember making maps for Impressive Title was really... weird? You'd make a flat, grayscale height map (the whiter, the higher the elevation and the darker the lower) and it would somehow generate a 3D map out of it. I made a cave den once for some RP that never took off. I have some artwork of my old characters somewhere... edit: FOUND THEM! 2009 ohhh my god. photoshop elements ass. i'm dying a little And I also found this single screenshot OMG such lovely babies!! I have an old photo I'll have to try and find I took of the game back in the day with a friend I made online, wonder what they are doing now haha. Back then I was for sure a furry in denial but that game definitely made me realize I was indeed a furry.

The thing with a forum is people can't be "passive" in the way they generally are with big social media. One has to interact, to comment, to post, ask questions, and I think social media makes the entire thing so passive (i.e. easy) that it can feel onerous for those used to it to be active participants. totally agree, it's also become a problem in the way that it discourages people from properly reading into something, and then interpreting it incorrectly, which may create misunderstandings, arguments, the lot. also feels a lot more 1 to 1 in a way, idk what it is.

i was online just at the tail end of the older era, i think, so bearing that in mind ... i miss all the damn petsites that used to be around LOL like! ugh! dragonadopters was my first one and so dear to me. i know a lot of the heavy hitters are still around, like chickensmoothie and gpx+ and dragcave, and flight rising has made itself a staple... but i still mourn smaller ones, like unicreatures... i was obsessed with them!
i also, weirdly, miss the old irc chatrooms i used to lurk in. (unsure if irc is the specific way to label them, because i was like 10 and didn't care) obviously, everyone using discord is similar, but... i don't know... the vibes, man! the vibes are different! the anonymity is really appealing, i guess?
omg no wait you know what i miss?! dolling. i was JUST too young to get into dolling, but my sister was really into dolling! (basically, you remember those ms paint bases from deviantart? it's like that- people would make bases of tiny pixel dolls, and then other artists would pixel-art their own clothes onto those bases. sometimes people would make dressup games from them :3) pixel art in general is kind of shafted by the fact that everything needs to be "responsive" (?) now, to accommodate for smartphones, i think? so there's barely anywhere you can post pixel art that won't be blurred to hell and back, unless you have perfect dimensions...
AND I MISS FLASH GAMES TOO WWWAAAAHHHHH IT'S NOT FAAAAIIIRRR And Also, i miss like... how... hands-on it seemed like the older web used to be? like, kids would end up learning really basic coding (at the VERY LEAST html/css) to customize their sites. you had to learn how to connect to servers on xmpp clients. Or like. whatever. omg. this was ages ago so i don't remember a lot. but now everything is SO clean and handed to you directly that i hear horror stories from the younger generation...about not trusting .exe files, because they're unfamiliar with them. it genuinely sucks. or not knowing how to extract files! i don't like how afraid people have become to explore the internet and their own computers...if they even have computers!
yap yap back in my day things were better cus ur on that damn phone

I swear, Neopets RP was where I truly first should have figured out I was a furry - I was big into that when I was younger, and was eventually shown FurAffinity in 2009 by a friend at school (which is wild that he felt confident enough to just show me in the middle of class, but I'm glad he did). Ended up signing up a year later and diving headfirst into the fandom from there; never really strayed away from FA, other than adding a few furries I knew on Facebook and keeping in touch that way. When I came back into the fandom in 2018, everyone had migrated to Twitter, so I followed - never really had a chance to experience all of the other facets of fandom presence on the internet, but it's so cool to read everyone's journeys!

it just feels harrowing to be online and if I didnt rely on social media for work I’d quit entirely. I did just that for about three months earlier in the year. It was great. Kind of reminded me of how it used to be where you'd only go online for about an hour a day, or perhaps have an "internet day."
One thing I miss is less a specific place, as much as a feeling. But the loss of the places has been a tragedy in its own right. Entire worlds gone forever in the blink of an eye. It meant so much but in an instant it was gone.
I'll never stop being upset about how Geocities went down...

I will never forgive Yahoo for how Geocities went out - truly a massive loss. That was such a staple of internet culture for decades, I miss it every day.

in the days of telegram and discord, honestly I miss IRC reject @everyone, embrace /WALLOPS there was something kind of cool about not having everything you ever said indexed and searchable for all time. irc without a bouncer (i never ran a bouncer until late) felt very much like you were either present at the party, or you missed it. you'd learn about stuff through lore and handed down stories and quotes that people half-remembered and not just be able to scroll back and figure everything out. there was a neat authenticity to it. there's also something to be said about how its overall complexity and inaccessibility to folks who weren't dedicated to learning about it kept it really weird. it's still very weird. another thing i appreciate.

I will never forgive Yahoo for how Geocities went out - truly a massive loss. That was such a staple of internet culture for decades, I miss it every day. It's the great flaw of the digital culture: it can be erased so easily. There's things now that are not only gone, but also anything ABOUT them is gone as well. It'd be like if back in the 80s a boomer had to try and explain what Sgt. Peppers was, but every Beatles record vanished.
