In spirit of using an old forum style... thingy, what are yall most fond of from way back when? for me a big thing used to be iscribble.net, the warriors community which was my pipeline to being a furry in the first place, ginga nagareboshi gin, deviantart, furaffinity back then. The internet felt a lot more authentic back then to me I guess! I kind of partially wonder why smaller corners of the internet seemingly went extinct. I know theyre there of course, but everyone seems pretty stuck to using big social media.to be honest, i even have my own gripes with even bluesky though it is far less worse than twitter. I've been making a big change in my life to try to be on social media less and welcome possibly slower, but more focused internet forms like this in my life haha everytime I log onto twitter i get bombarded with huge old recycled posts of viral content and rage bait i hope people wake up and say no one day! not to sound too tinfoil...

Virtual chatrooms, like Wolf Quest and Second Life are part of a period of time that I hold fond to my heart. When contacting others that aren't nearby to you was something that required more coordination through back and forth messages, rather than shooting an instant message to a device that they keep on them at all times. While I'm grateful for these amenities and the conveniences they've provided us, part of me misses these archaic virtual worlds.

WOLFQUEST was something i totally forgot, and you reminded me one huge thing i grew up on was this niche game called impressive title, huge part of my internet use for awhile haha. wolfquest was so basic but so magical, i still dream of more games like this being made to this day, i do love me a good virtual chatroom secondlife was something i was late to surprisingly, impressive title is similar.. ish but feral animals so thats what i was on. this forum was actually inspired by my forum use from that game particularly. I totally agree on the convenience being great, but yeah, something about it does burn me out!

I came to the furry fandom a little bit late to have been on furry-specific boards like this one, sadly. (All the more reason to join one now!) Mostly niche little fora devoted to general-interest geekery that I happened to stumble in to.
The most fun I had on the Old Internet was swapping huge amounts of low-resolution anime on the university backbone back in undergrad, where all the computer-literate people had stashed a huge archive of the stuff. I found so many strange little shows that way...

Oekaki boards !! Oekaki central is where I started out but I was on a few and I will forever miss them ;; and I was big into role playing so I frequented avidgamers a lot too. I was in a bunch of different ones but the one I remember most was one called starlight caverns I think? It was wolves with elemental powers iirc 🤔 I always think about the people I role played with and hope they’re doing well 💖

I remember being very fond of the old deviantart. Everyone’s pages were customized with little stamps and stickers, and it just felt very lively. I think those little personal touches were what really made the internet feel alive; now it’s all monetized and sleek to reach a wider audience.
Beyond that, I really liked spore when I was younger. There was a social feature to share your creations and such. Social games like spore or animal jam were my favorite thing, and we don’t have much like it anymore. I’ve also been curious as to why they died, there are plenty of people who I think are interested. To me it feels like a lot of people grew out of these niche interests, and the newer generation have their own things. So the community dwindles slowly.

Old deviantart for sure. And things like Neopets and Habbo Hotel back in 2005-2009 era. The internet really felt more mysterious? and interesting back then, i miss it.

Man I never joined but I have this nostalgic set of thoughts about Yerf.com and old school webcomics. Things were slower paced and it felt like new webpages or forums were these special discoveries.

Browsing Deviantart anonymously around like 2014 or so and seeing very gorgeous anthros must've been a massively important stepping stone in the alteration of my brain chemistry...

i definitely have to second wolfquest! i spent so much time on there. deviantart, old random furry roleplay forums, and little virtual pet websites like chickensmoothie and wajas. i guess those were a little less furry, but there was a lot of crossover too.
and furcadia... i loved just exploring all of the different little places on there.

Lots of old webcomics, too many to remember by this point, and most of them no longer active There were some really good ones. I recall the old days of deviantArt, and browsing the VCL archive. Mostly to look after one artist, back then. It took a while to branch out. But I really just miss the various forums and the connections made back then. Mostly book forums. Even ran a few of them way back when. Oh, and IRC. Lots of good IRC memories.

impressive title, its forums and related forums, and later on the feralheart forums although I was never nearly as into FH as a game as I was IT. i would play IT from 7am to 9pm lol also Chickensmoothie for sure. wolfhome also sometimes but that community frequently had bad vibes for me LOL

The thing with a forum is people can't be "passive" in the way they generally are with big social media. One has to interact, to comment, to post, ask questions, and I think social media makes the entire thing so passive (i.e. easy) that it can feel onerous for those used to it to be active participants.
