Thought I'd create a bit of a general purpose album recommendation thread! Always plan to sit down and listen to more albums - so I love to share what I come across and listen to some recommended by other people!
Post your favorites - post new discoveries - post stuff you just find interesting!!
I'll start - feel free to pinch the post format :3
===== the bird and the bee - the bird and the bee
An album I've actually sat down and listened to quite a few times over the years, but never actually recommended to anyone until now. Upon stumbling on another one of their songs ("Polite Dance Song" - which is super good!), I thought it was time to give it another listen to and write down what I like about it. They're an american indie pop duo, made up of Inara George ("the bird") and Greg Kurstin ("the bee"). I think to me - the biggest stand out on this album has ALWAYS been the vocals. Inara George has this almost kind of.. ghostly quality to her. Hard to explain - but one you can kinda understand what I mean from the first couple of songs. I think she's fantastic in this. There's a very sort of... 'disaffected' quality to the album. The music is relaxing, and _almost_ cheerful sounding - with this kind of underlying sad quality to it. Lots of musical influences here, I think. Dips into a lot of places. Definitely worth a listen, I certainly have come back to it quite a few times... I'd say "Spark" is the standout song here for me. If you're gonna listen to one thing off of this album, it has to be that one. It's almost completely different to everything else there, and it's an amazing album closer. Definitely the best showcase of everything both of them are capable of. Favorite Song: Spark Spotify link: Youtube link: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFGc4VJObQixxE1jM3iieVSzOG3tZlbUc

(i don't know if... this thread is for ANYONE to post recommendations... if it isn't i'm sorry) elseq 1 - 5 - Autechre very technically this is a "series" of albums but they're all like 5 - 6 albums and are all part of the same collection so i count it as an album.... elseq comes from the british electronic duo autechre consisting of sean booth and rob brown. their earlier releases such as incunabula or amber were more adjacent to idm and electronic music most people would be familiar with. starting with their album untilted (iirc) they moved onto utilising software called max msp, basically a programming language for music within their albums. elseq is entirely made in max msp. i think. it is like nothing you will have ever heard. all of the songs within elseq are really long, ranging in length from 6 minutes to 30 minutes. all of the volumes of elseq are so surreal to listen to and even as a seasoned autechre enjoyer i still find myself in awe listening to some of these songs. "acdwn2" is probably the most abrasive song from the entire collection. but then immediately you move into "foldfree casual", this beautiful ambient-esque synth track with extremely minimal beats. "freulaeux" has like 6 different beat patterns laid on top of each other. it's also notable because it's one of the only autechre releases (excluding AE_2022-) to be digital only; even NTS sessions, the release that came after this (split into 4 albums, with a total run time of 8 hours) was pressed onto 8xCD and 16xLP. iirc in an interview about "quaristice", another album, they commented that the FLAC files are the final product... but they don't object to people wanting physical releases. anyway yeah go check it out favourite song: TBM2 spotify link:

Eons by Mimicking Birds! it's an album (and artist, even) that i don't hear a lot of people talking about, at least on-line & in the general areas of interest of mine that i lurk around. i wish i could say why exactly i think it's good, but i don't really know how to articulate that well as much as the experience of going through the songs on your own, but it's a favourite of mine for the very ethereal feeling sounds and touching lyrics and theming within the tracks.
favourite track has to be either Bloodlines or Night Light.
great thread, by the way!

I've not heard of them, but I'm interested in any album that really is best summed up by "go and experience it yourself" :3c
Thanks for the recc!
Thank you!! There's a few other song/fave album ones but I thought a general purpose "post any albums you like/want to share in here" thread would be a great way for people to find new stuff :3

An album that I love going back to listen to in full is the remastered version of… Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? - The Unicorns The album was initially recorded around 2003, and was rereleased in 2014. It’s sort of indie rock, indie pop, but definitely isn’t like any other album under that genre that I’ve heard at least. Maybe I just need to expand my horizons. Best I can think of is stuff by Islands but theyre also underground lol. The instrumentals are so fun and general vibe is just! I don’t know how to describe it, I’m not really the best at describing stuff in general But yeah, it means so much to me and want to spread it around ^^ My favorite tracks are Sea Ghost, Ghost Mountain, and Inoculate the Innocuous!

Thank you all for all the great recommendations! Got a lot of new albums to listen to while I work next week >:3 Another one from me: ==== Fantastic Planet - FailureProbably can't think of any album I've listened to more than "Fantastic Planet". Over the past year or so I think Failure has become one of my favorite bands. Sort of the alternative rock band a lot of people's favorite alternative rock bands listened to. I just love every single song on this album, it's sort of a masterpiece in my eyes. Also DEFINITELY worth listening to in the album order - the little segues really make it. Favorite Song: "Another Space Song" Spotify:

I really like T-Square, and through that I think I realized I like jazz fusion a lot. I listened to Sister Marian because I heard it sounded like the Super Mario Bros theme (or rather that the Super Mario Bros theme sounds like it, since it came first) and that led me to listen through "Welcome To The Rose Garden" after I saw YouTube suggestions for it and I got hooked. Some composers working on Famicom game soundtracks in the 80s (including Koji Kondo) have pointed out T-Square as an influence, so a lot of T-Square's music retroactively sounds videogamey (like Truth feels Mega Man-like, to me) and if you're someone who listens to a lot of video game soundtracks but want to branch out of that, T-Square can be good! I really like having music with no lyrics that still has a good amount of interesting stuff going on, without sounding harsh. Music can help me focus.

A Place for Owls - how we dig in the earth (2024)This band flew into my radar (haha, owls, get it?) when the DIY scene on Bluesky started to really take off, and I'm so thankful they did - this album is one of the most emotional, gripping, and ethereal pieces of art I've had the pleasure of listening to in a long, long time. There are so many beautiful textures of guitar, incredible vocals, and expert songwriting that craft absolutely gorgeous track after track. If you're a veteran of the emo-revival scene, or new to 5th wave and want a great entry to get your talons wet, this record is sure to please most ears. FFO: Manchester Orchestra, Coldplay, Frightened Rabbit Favorite Tracks: find your friends and hold them close, a tattoo of a candle, help me let the right ones in

oh the bird and the bee is fantastic, a band ive been listening to since i was a kid! if you want more from them, check out their hall and oates tribute/cover album. it is WONDERFUL. "ray guns are not just the future" is also fun. i gotta hype "MG Ultra." Machine Girl is something special - industrial, heavy metal, electronic, hardcore! each album/ep they put out gets better than the last. if you've played or heard about neon white, they did the soundtrack. its not for everyone - but if its for you, its really for you. favorite tracks off of MG Ultra: "Nu Nu Meta Phenomena," "Psychic Attack," (seriously nuts) "Cicadas," and "Grindhouse." If you're checking them out, start with cicadas. its not as intense as the other songs but its a good taste of what youre going to get with the rest of the album. they try a few different things in this album that are a lot of fun, too, so if youre not a fan of one song, you might like another - "Motherfather," "Half Asleep," and "Ass2Mars," have that machine girl sound but are something fresh and new. if you like MG Ultra, check out their EP "RePorpoised Phantasies," and "Because I'm Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For." BIYAAHEYSF also has possibly the dopest album cover ever conceived.

That's a glowing recommendation, need to check them out!!! Thank you for the recommendation. Yess! I've only really listened to the self titled album and "The Polite Dance Song" (amazing music video), and I do enjoy some Hall and Oates so sounds like a great combo!
Ooohh yes! I have a lot of friends who love Machine Girl, only really listened to bits of "WLFGRL" before (absolutely LOVE "Ghost" from that album - first heard it when a friend used it as combat music in D&D!), not sure I ever finished listening to the album! Really ought to, their stuff is up my alley!

ive been trying to think of an album to suggest all day....ummMMmm well let's say, ziltoid the omniscient by devin townsend? he's one of my favorite musicians! find it on youtube/spotify yourself ~_~ i think they took down all the proper "all in one" videos of the albums so it's all playlists. ugly
it's a rock opera concept album, where the story is about an alien (puppet) who comes to earth for The Ultimate Coffee, hates it, tries to destroy a planet, realizes that he is, in fact, Not that special in the grand scheme of things, and that's fine. lol
it's prog metal! devin has a very melodic-metal sound... it's a beautiful album as much as it's a high energy \m/ album, so i'm convinced anyone who can appreciate good music would enjoy it. but that's because i'm insanely biased
favorite song! i also adore 'by your command' and 'planet smasher' and 'the greys' too... 'cause i love this album lol
i'll check out some of the stuff other people suggested soon! (shoutout to machine girl though, i haven't listened to the new album yet but wlfgrl changed lives)
