For me it was Digimon, Star Fox, and The Lion King. Of course, I started as an antifurry twerp, then liked the art but found fursuits creepy, then had a puritan phase that took years to really flush out of my system. Now I fursuit and happily draw raunchy stuff when I'm in the mood.
My entry point ended up being custom inflatables. I was around in the really early era of stuff like the G&G dragon and Hollow Paws in the latter half of the 2000's. It was still another fifteen years before my art was good enough, I met the right 3D modelers, and there was an accessible manufacturer though...

Robin Hood was my first introduction! When The Lion King came out, I absolutely fell in love with that too. I found the furry fandom pretty early on, and knew furry was my people. Furry has been, hands down the biggest part of my life since I was 4 or so; just about all of my friends and loved ones are furries! I used to RP a lot on Furcadia, but after I got into my late-20s it was hard to keep that up. OH MY GOD I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN AGES, holy shit how have you been man Sorry off topic but wow

I was really into furry-adjacent stuff as a young kid like sonic, pokemon, and to a lesser extent warrior cats but I think what really sealed it was flipnote hatena, if anyone remembers that lol... later went through a pretty long period of not wanting to be associated with anything furry even though i REALLY wanted to draw them. It was mostly just due to embarrassment and not wanting to deal with people's generally negative view on furries. weird cognitive dissonance goin on and really stupid in retrospect but whateva.
anyway finally stopped being stubborn and gave in about 4 years ago, only really started delving more into it within the last couple months though so im still super new to all this ^^
ok life story over thx for reading

One day in 2006 I looked up like animal stories or something on my old Nokia 3200 WAP phone (ancient internet protocol for mobile devices it was SLOWWW) and ended up stumbling upon here: chakatsden.com/ and honestly the rest is history, I still didn't discover FA till like 2007 then things exploded and I had my first fursona, which was a fox. Good times.

I got into it because I've always enjoyed fursuits and costuming; my interest in the art itself only grew after I found the fandom around 2007ish.

Like a lot of the people here, it started pretty young. I think the first two big influences that hit me were seeing All Dogs go to Heaven and The Lion King, and I kinda played out little stories in those worlds a lot as a kid. I was always attracted to animal/anthro related media in general as well. I'd seek out stories like Foxes of Firstdark and watch stuff like The Plague Dogs etc.
I discovered furry as a concept beyond my own little worlds when I was a tween. The gateway drug was the Redwall books, which led me to the Redwall webpage, which was run by a furry who had some links including to Yerf.com, which I lurked on a fair bit. I actually started participating on forums and stuff when I was a teen, eventually getting a dA then FA, and that kinda solidified it.

I'd always been into talking animals and nonhuman protagonists, refusing to watch films that were only humans and becoming deeply obsessed with book series such as Warriors and Guardians of Gahoole. When I found drawings of talking animal people online I instantly loved it. I think I truly got into the furry fandom itself after watching youtube videos of Telephone as well as fursuit dance competition videos.

I joined the fandom at the beginning of 2015. Made friends with a furry in another fandom and I really liked his fox OCs. I remember wishing I had fox OCs like him and then realizing "hey! I can just make some". It's because of him that my main sona is a fox.
One could say I subconsciously became a furry much earlier though. I watched a lot of furry animations on Youtube in the 00s. I grew up with anthro media like Warriors and Tom & Jerry. I've always loved furry/anthro stuff, even before I knew the term "furry" existed.

It was absolutely the classic animated animal films everyone always tends to list, I am not particularly original lmao The Lion King, Robin Hood and Balto were my childhood faves, especially The Lion King 2
But I think also I was very influenced by the various animal fiction books and series of the time too; Warrior Cats, Redwall, Varjak Paw etc, not to mention the Ginga series with it being so accessible on Youtube And honestly, Neopets was a big aspect too, I was and am still so into Neopets
I was so into all of it that as soon as I got proper internet access and learned what 'furry' was, I identified with the term early in childhood

When I was 15 I stumbled across A Walk in the Park by Eric Schwartz. This was 2012 and I was bored so I jumped down a rabbit hole from which there was no coming back.

I remember even as a kid liking scaly creatures, snakes, lizards, etc. But there was this point around when I was like 12 years old where there was a good bit of dragons in various media at the time (Anime, Movies, TV shows, games) I remember being really drawn in by movies like Dragonheart and games like Spyro. It was like the whole concept of dragons went from -never there- to -I see them everywhere- and I just was so hyper fixated, hahah.
It would end up leading me towards some old otherkin related boards, mainly ones centred around dragons and thats when I came up with my own dragon and a name to go with it, the same one I use to this day actually. ^.=.^
From there I branched out and found the furry community. <3

Gosh it’s so interesting how universal the experience is for how people ended up getting into furry before it was more accessible and mainstream in the before social media times haha. I mean, it makes sense though.
Animated movies with talking animals/animal people is definitely a huge part of it for me. And Redwall too, like someone mentioned above! The cartoons Road Rovers and Swat Cats were also some of my favorites. Even as a little kid playing “house” with the other kids, I always wanted to play as the dog. I only wanted toys/plushies that were animals. I’d create these intricate and dramatic storylines with them. When we finally got internet at home (maybe…2000-2001ish?) I remember somehow stumbling onto GoldenWolfen’s and Huskie’s art, as well as quite a few others on sites like VCL and that’s probably where it really took off for me. And after that, I found oekaki and neopets and well.. here we are haha.

Back in the early 2000s I somehow stumbled upon the fantasy art archive Elfwood. It was organized into pages with about 20 artist galleries on each of those pages. Anyway, the first few pages had Ursula Vernon, XianJaguar, Dustmeat and some others. From Elfwood I followed links to Yerf, Livejournal, VCL and a lot of other now defunct websites. I've been lurking all that time, only really joined and took part myself back in 2020.

I wonder if that’s how I found artists and followed the trail to the other sites with more furry art! My memory is kinda bad, I so wish I could remember more clearly ;;
