For me it was Films like -Fox and the hound -Oliver and Company -Robinhood -Balto
Took a hiatus in 2012 but came back strong in 2021 finally creating a fursona.

i was probably always lowkey a furry (i semi-ironically identified as a wolfaboo as a kid) and had lots of quad/feral ocs and drew 'em a lot, didn't read books unless they were about talking animals, etc etc...
but i consider what introduced me to true furrydom and appreciating biped anthros to be a lapfox trax song i was shown on wolf-haven. it had cover art by squeedgemonster, and i fell in love with the style. i still consider squeedge to be one of my fav artists.
i also was really into webcomics about that time, most of which were furry. cheap thrills, lackadaisy, some others that i've long since forgotten the names of.
that was back when i was in middle school, well over ten years ago now. i don't really remember exact time frames.

I've always been interested in media thats considered furry since I was a kid, and definitely pretended to be a dog a lot at recess. Oddly enough, stumbling onto youtube furry MVs introduced me to the concept of the fandom, and I quickly joined Deviantart to partake. This video is one I fondly remember lol

I feel like I always had some fascination with furry. Even when my initial perception was "ewww furries are weird cringe losers," I couldn't help but wonder why people would be into it. It wasn't until later when I saw furry creators on youtube where I saw the fandom more authentically for the first time (Thank you Ash Coyote, Pocari Roo, Stormi the Folf, and BetaEtaDelota) and saw that it wasn't so bad as I thought. Ash Coyote's "The Fandom" documentary and its spin-offs did the most in helping me understand what furry is about and how it came to be.
But I did not join until much later. One morning phone call I was given a prompt by my partner, which was to design a space-themed dragon fursona. After some doodling, I came up with what would become Aster! And after I finished, everything just clicked for me. This fuzzy derg is basically me, and I liked it. And that's how I ultimately ended up joining the furry fandom!
Now I spend most of my time looking at art and wanting to get all the commissions really badly. And I wish to attend conventions more even if its a once a year or so thing.

Erm… Ludwig (YT), kinda. Basically, I watched a video of him playing an RNG twitch ball game where he’d have to do anything his chat said. One of these was that he’d have to create a fursona… and well he did it, commissioned an artist to make it, and I kinda thought that was a bit funny (and cool) to see and so I went to one of the furry subreddits and kinda just started browsing the art. Within a span of 1 hour I went from thinking furries were kinda weird and fringe to then thinking that “wow, i want to draw one”. And so I began drawing (rarely did any art before) and viewing a lot more furry art since. This was a little more than 3 months ago now.
The shows/movies I watched with anthros (looney tunes, zootopia, lackadaisy) probably helped as well.

I thought it was weird at the time but those def tickled something in the back of my brain for sure.

Fox and the hound was big for me too, but to be honest I think when I was younger, every anthropomorphic animal caught my interest and it just snowballed when I got regular internet access. Now here we are

i really cant take god's icon LOL umm for me, i was introduced to the fandom basically as soon as i got online, (or just about anyway... i was 9!) so it was a natural progression from typical kid-animal roleplaying to being a furry! i never had the chance to feel shame or weirdness about it. this pet site i used to play called dragonadopters... basically everyone i met on there was a furry, and they were all super nice and chill, so i only had good impressions. probably what made me "officially" join the fandom was that i wanted to roleplay with them! my first oc for roleplaying were a wolf princess named sihra, and my first fursona was a tiny purple fox named kira :3 but i'm sure i had tons of pokemon/warriors/"lets play house and i'll be the dog" roleplay experience before then lol
but seeing everyone else's stories is super neat! i'm glad we're all in the fandom now ^_^

warrior cats + deviantart, back in the day. when i was like 10/11 i was in a group where people turned the beatles into cats and wrote about it but i started seeing furry stuff on DA from there and it always intrigued me. i think my first ever fursona was a fluffy white cat with rainbow scene hair if that gives you an idea of when that was LOL. also being introduced to stuff like renard. earlier than that before i knew what a fandom was i was constantly pretending to be an animal and daydreaming about how nice it would be to be one and not a person, so i'm not surprised i ended up becoming a furry.

in 2017/18, fursuits were what originally got me interested in the fandom and the label "furry" itself, since previously I had just consumed and created sooo much Warriors content. there were signs previously though, before I knew that this was a whole thing, such as heavily preferring to watch any movie or play any game that had an animal protagonist or just animal characters in it. I remember my mom brought home some She-Ra DVDs and I wanted to watch solely so I could see Swiftwind I also really loved pretending to be an animal as a kid and absolutely looooved this one cheap werewolf costume we got one Halloween, because it meant I could wear the head around and pretend to BE a wolf. you can imagine how my eyes sparkled when I realized what fursuits were sad to say that I never got to experience the early-2010s furry internet, creating sparkledogs and engaging in forums, nono I was too monitored by my mom to really do any of that (and honestly, probably for the better, considering the horror stories that also come with that). Howeverrrr, I sort-of made sparklecats with my coloring pencils in my spare time! I eventually made my first fursona around 2018!

I've basically been "furry adjacent" for as far as I can remember, and Spyro the Dragon was probably my "gateway drug". My dad got the first game for me because my favorite color was purple and I really like dinosaurs-- dinosaurs and dragons are kind of the same thing, to him, I guess, either way he thought I would like it and he was totally right. Pokémon probably deserves equal credit there too, both were extremely influential in my tastes growing up and I've been playing Pokémon since it hit the US. I think both of those things happened around the same time-- Spyro came out when I was 5 and Pokémon hit when I was in kindergarten. I was also really into Sonic the Hedgehog, but I still don't think I really like that in a "furry way". The two fandoms were so distinct from eachother back in the day, so it's still internalized in my head that way. Throughout the years I would partake in other animal-focused stuff, anthro or not. Even fooled around on Furcadia for a minute or two. But I didn't think of myself as a furry then.
Once or twice in my mid teens I tried making a fursona for myself but none of them ever stuck. I think the turning point for me was finding videos of furry dance competitions for the first time. I was captivated. Around 2017-2018 I found Pocari Roo's youtube channel and that's what finally got me interested in actually getting involved in the furry fandom proper (which, in my mind, is the "requirement" for my being considered furry- not just "liking furry stuff", but actually wanting to participate in the community too). In early 2018 Butterball was born, and a few months later I had my first partial fursuit made just in time for Anthro Southeast 2018 in Chattanooga.
So for me it was a really slow burn from when I was a little kid, up until I was 25, and then things got real, really fast, lmao

it was fursuit dance comp videos for me :person_kneeling: but in a deeper sense, i have always had a deep and long connection with wildlife and nature. i was always drawing/mimicking the animals i saw in books n documentaries n etc as a kid, and became so deeply obsessed with anything anthropomorphic; warrior cats, disney movies, pokemon mystery dungeon(this was probably the most influential factor AHAH) and others im probably not remembering atm. when i finally got access to the internet, it was a pretty quick pipeline that lead me from pokemon mystery dungeon art to furry art. from there, that's when i was like, oh! people that are like me! it has a name? i didn't really use the title until i had just became a teenager, and i had fursuit dance competition videos recommended to me after binging warrior cat AMVs. after watching several fursuit videos, i distinctly remember feeling, "yeah!!! i really want to be a part of this!!!" sorry if this post is a little ramble-y hahah. it's nice to reminisce, furry has done so much for me <3
edited to mention Lapfox Trax too. Whew

Whenever we'd larp Pokemon battles on the playground, I always volunteered to be the Pokemon. I wonder if that's a pretty universal predictor of who ends up being a furry?

I remember pretending to be animals as far back as preschool; one of my earliest memories is asking someone to play Pongo & Perdita with me. I was obsessed with animated animal films & became a Neopets addict in 2003. I was always an artist as well and had various feral & anthro characters in my head throughout childhood. So I was living the furry kid life for sure, but I didn't learn about the fandom until I saw a furry thread on Gaia Online in middle school. I was really into Loveless at the time and asked someone, "Is Ritsuka a furry?" Their answer isn't quite SFW enough for this forum, but it certainly stuck with me... Unfortunately I didn't pursue it as a community until my final year in High School. I didn't know any other furries and it was kind of frowned up, so it took a few years to really embrace it. I only met one other furry in college and he struggled with it (though now he's living his best furry life out there!) I remember scrolling through the fyeahfursuiting tumblr and thinking "Oh, I just like looking at them, it doesn't mean I'm actually a furry..." Seeing a partial named Wylee Coydog tipped me over the edge and I finally made an FA & a twitter account. I ended up breaking into my local furry scene after seeing someone I followed on twitter in my local Value Village. I'm grateful that I was brave enough to talk to them because it became such a huge turning point in my life. It changed everything for me, to meet others with whom I could truly be myself around and share my interests without shame. I wouldn't be who I am today without the furries, queers, and artists surrounding me and I feel very lucky to lead the life that I do.
