I uninstalled all social media from my phone and it's really helped my mental state out a lot. One of the things I find myself doing constantly is comparing myself to others unconsciously, and it really just sort of made me miserable almost every visit... Trying to cut out instant dopamine hits like that so I can focus on more slow-drip dopamine activities like art and writing.

This comes completely out of ignorance on my part, is there a specific reason why FurAffinity isn't being considered as the prime choice for online furry interaction by newer generations? Exoduses aside due to previous controversies and passing of the original owner, I see FA being taken into consideration as a posting site only by older fans (I don't want to misuse the term "grey-muzzle" here because I'm not referring to a certain demographic, I'm talking about people who have known the fandom since a certain number of years) while people who are just now approaching it stick to social media only and completely ignore FA as a hub alternative. How come? Is it a form of "online lazyness", as in when someone new finds an interest on a certain board they don't go around the net to find additional spaces anymore? Or is there a common say/unwritten rule between "young'uns" to just avoid FA entirely? I don't condone many of FA's choices of management and moderation, but as far as simply being a web place where you can store a gallery and interact with others pertaining to your subculture, it still seems to be the most appropriate place. The fact that it'd never train any kind of AI on its users or it has no algorithms for submission popularity should at least get a positive reactions from web denizens. In my experience: - Archaic UI and Backend (It took them years to implement gallery folders)
- Issues with site administrators, whether it be behaviors or dragging their heels with regards to improving the site
- Lack of streamlining in the uploading process; you're prompted to fill out a whole sheet of info instead of a simple click and drag
- Less "networking" options
That being said, I'm very glad it's still around despite its faults, and I still make it a point to upload most of everything I make there. Honestly, part of the appeal is that it's so barebones, so you're not overwhelmed with distracting JavaScript at every turn.

In Honestly, part of the appeal is that it's so barebones, so you're not overwhelmed with distracting JavaScript at every turn. I feel the same way about a lot of older sites. I suppose my issue with Twitter was never that it was 'nice' and became 'mean', but that it was Twitter. Rarely has a site 'upgrading' ever done so to the betterment of the people involved. Then again, I was grumpy when Yiffstar rebranded, and were I older would probably also complain about people leaving alt.fan.furry. I do hate how JS heavy a lot of the web is now. Completely unnecessary.

Valyce Negative I tried using FA in the past and for me, personally, it feels like I had a harder time curating what I see when browsing. There's a lot of content on FA I'm personally just not wanting to see. I'm not sure if maybe I missed any features and I do log in to see my watch feed every now and then, but it's much easier to curate my own space and interests on social medias it seems, despite it's own flaws & not being just for furries, it felt like the more viable option. I also have mixed feelings on the layout when using it but it has its charm. Honestly most FA artists I follow, I discovered from other platforms and not browsing I like the site for what it is and what it's done for the community but I also personally don't feel like my art fits (if that makes any sense) in with the general FA vibes so I've just stopped posting on it in general. It also feels hard to branch out to using other sites like FA when the community considers replacement spaces, as I do still rely on social media for commission income so I can't just drop one for the other (I already have issues remembering to post on instagram or bluesky) the choices feel a bit overwhelming at time haha

General reply to all that quoted me: I found all reasons described to be fair points, maybe my only objection would be to the one that FA is unused because it lacks the tools to expand one's own reach considering that it'd be exactly the same algorhythm people feel so frustrated about and shadowed by it. To make matters short and unify all responses we could be saying "FA is unused because it got built on old standards and it didn't develop further", but we should also take into consideration the fact that we are essentially comparing an art gallery site to social media: apples and oranges. This is frankly mostly FA's fault as I clearly remember an old PR announcement rebranding the site to the "furry social media": basically they mislabeled themselves.

Oh there is definitely many reasons why FA got abandoned for sure. I think in my opinion is since it is an art site there isn’t a way for non artists to really be seen or heard so there is not tooo much incentive for them to use it. I think non artists enjoy social media avenues more because it allows them to be seen and heard much more. There also isn’t really like an easy way to have community or subcommunities and what not on there. It’s very hard to find artists you would like, and nevermind finding non artists friends on there like at all.

I personally do actively use FA. Mostly as a way to keep up with artists that post there since I can basically guarantee that I'll their posts unlike with normal social media where it is likely to be missed. Though a notable exception is Bluesky where I can easily swap feeds so I can avoid reposts and only see normal posts from people, all the way to feeds built by the artists themselves for their own work. I do also use it to post art I get thanks to how it functions more as a gallery along with having folders so I can keep stuff organized between my characters.
I agree that it is not fun browsing around with no blacklist and stuff not being tagged to begin with. Though if the post is tagged, I do have a browser extension where I can put in tags and other keywords so things do get filtered out for me. If anyone is interested, I can link to it (as long as its within the rules). Though I'll admit that I use Firefox and I'm not sure if its on Chrome or the other browsers. Though the most annoying part is having to open the posts, see if they're tagged, and manually adding them alongside potential tags that have similar wording. And while stuff does slip by still, browsing is much more bearable for me compared to before.
And while I also agree that FA can feel dated compared to other gallery sites, there's no denying that its still the best place for furry artists and creators. The fact that its made by and for the fandom makes it leagues better than traditional social media in terms of continuing to foster creativity. I just wish they can one day fix their code so we can get much needed features. I wish it was easier to connect with people directly on the site but they sadly closed down forums due to the costs and now you have to use discord which I also find annoying. And I won't deny that the site had its controversies, but of course we cannot get into that due to rule 1 (Just wanted to mention that I'm not ignorant about it at least).
Overall, I do still like FA in terms of having a gallery for art, even if its all gift art or commissions. Its a nice place to aggregate it all to show off your fursona(s) and characters. I do like how customizable the profile is to be able to show off interests and even boundaries, unlike how the bio portion of other socials are incredibly small by comparison. Its great to help keep up with artists that are active if you're nervous about missing their posts through regular social media. But alas I can't deny folks preferring regular social media due to better tools for self-curating and discoverability, even I have Bluesky as my main despite my FA link being at the top of my Linktree. (Speaking of, I added this lil place to the list of links!)

I seem to be in the minority in that I never found Twitter to be addictive. Seeing a stream of every more-or-less disconnected thought that went through some people's head just left me... wondering if they had a point, I guess? It's not like a thread, where there's a topic that starts it and (most) everything comes back to. So, not getting that infamous dopamine hit from it, it just kind of left me bored. Marking myself as somebody who also never saw the appeal of Twitter. It feels like I dodged a bullet the way people talk about it.
Anyway, I've also been craving the whole forum thing again. Something about being slower, MUCH less competitive... I mean I can actually spend ~20 minutes typing this post without stressing about being late to respond. I'm honestly curious about the deeper reasons why we prefer this format, since from a narrower perspective mostly everything one could want in a forum has already been solved by Reddit or Discord. Themed boards, threads, community, etc..
I'm not shilling for either though. I agree that there's clearly something more meaningful that's missing from both of those. After all, why else would so many people jump at the chance to participate in something like this again? I'd love to see forums return (all decentralized, user-owned communities, really) but I want to feel confident that there's a solid reason behind it other than nostalgia. Otherwise we'll just be suffering from the same old problems, just with a different coat of paint.

I have yet to figure out how anyone uses a public and popular Discord server. A private one with 5-6 friends to play D&D on is one thing, but a widely available one with real traffic in it... the chat jumps so far so fast it gives me headaches just watching it scroll. I can hazard a guess regarding Reddit, though it's more a suspicion than a fact I know, and it comes to that "decentralized, user-owned" condition you mentioned. Reddit is all the forums for every topic. I'm not familiar enough with the administrative structure to know this for sure, but I get the impression all those forums are also moderated (or the moderators moderated) by an overarching team that controls the site as a whole (not too dissimilar from Proboards making stipulations on this little corner). That's too much for one team. There's no way they can actually know what makes the fans of all those sub-genres and sub-forums fans, or empathize with all of it. They'll know when they hear something they don't like, though, and might strike it down without realizing they just hit right at the heart of what that "community" is centered around. As an example: I doubt anyone here will bat an eye at the remark, "An animated lioness giving me bedroom eyes through a movie screen stirred something in me." Not only do we get it, but half of us got hit with those same eyes. That's why we're here. Now imagine how that must sound to someone who doesn't get it, didn't see those eyes, and isn't here for that. They were here to learn if a certain movie was worth spending half a day's pay to go watch. Now they're concerned that, just maybe, we shouldn't be encouraging paramour with animals, even fictional ones. They report that to the higher-level moderators, who agree that sounds a little weird, and our forum is given a warning: knock it off, or we'll have to shut this nonsense down. creeps won't do that. He's part of this fandom and knows what makes it tick, and what sort of stuff we discuss. No board set up by a fan is going to suffer that kind of disconnect between administration and the users. And because of how forums like this are structured, we aren't likely to accidentally wander into another board dedicated to the WWF, or some pro-wrestler fanatics suddenly find themselves here with us. I think that style of ownership and level of insulation goes a long way toward keeping people comfortable talking, and mostly around that shared interest the board was dedicated to. Or maybe I've just never used Reddit right. I only peek into it when a search engine turns up a post there answering some question I just asked, and tend to leave immediately.

From what I see it simply looks at what you just described. The one I use is called FurAffinity (FA) Blacklist. This one works by having four different fields (Tags, Types, Categories, Artists) where within each you type in the relevant tags. Tags is the more straight-forward one I'll say. Its the best one because it looks at submission info to help block out things. Again, its not perfect since not everyone tags their stuff but with the extra fields it can help catch much more and I've found it easier to browse with this on. The only con I will mention is that the thumbnails will take a bit to load in as the extension filters through stuff but I'm willing to put up with it if it means comfier browsing.

The structure of Reddit is definitely way too generalized. Also the site itself is so big at this point that it's almost impossible to keep a small community together, especially since everyone is encouraged to jump between a bunch of different categories. You'd honestly have an easier time trying to form a community in a Youtube comments section.
...I'm reading again what I wrote up there and I almost want to wash my hands for trying to somewhat advocate for Reddit. What was I thinking.

… user-owned communities, really) but I want to feel confident that there's a solid reason behind it other than nostalgia. Otherwise we'll just be suffering from the same old problems, just with a different coat of paint. Hey there! I’ll try to describe to you my reasoning behind the creation of my idea, and how to be honest, it is not rooted in nostalgia, in the least. With pretty much how I feel a majority of the fandoms prescense now tied to social media (in my opinion), I feel like that takes away a lot of avenues for in depth discussion and interactions. Twitter, bluesky, instagram, pretty much all the big ones I can think of that everyone is on, is not very “discussion” friendly in my opinion. If you asked me this question via twitter, honestly I probably would have either not responded, or it would have been very watered down. And watered down is exactly how I feel social media interaction is, shallow and lacking an actual conversation (maybe to only me, I am unsure). I feel like almost that it does not let me or at least discourages it with how I would have to make 30 tweets or blue sky posts just to write this. Social media is intimidating for me personally, which also makes me feel kind of isolated. It is very large, I do like condensed and more focused ways of interacting with people, people who I know will be interested because that is what they came here for. What I also enjoy about forums is organized topics, I feel it is easier for to make friends when the same people pop up, I like that there is no algorithm where im force fed content from what feels like a machine. Because of my disdain for social media and my avoidance of it, I miss out on socializing there, but when I did socialize there, I hardly got anything out of it or even felt ‘socialized’. Honestly I could probably go on about this stuff forever, but I hope this makes sense, and I apologize if this is too long Edit for another tidbit; I honestly like “infodumping” and I find forums pretty infodumping friendly. I am also in plenty of group chats that are for art but I tend to not be active in most of my group chats for some reason. It is easy for me to become a bystander or something, honestly I’m not sure. I find messaging apps sometimes intimidating as well. I do not like the modern thing of being expected to be on my phone and available at all times so I have an aversion to messaging apps. 2nd edit for more bc I find this convo interesting; I enjoy very much getting to write out everything I want to say. On social media, with how short my responses have to be and how I feel I should only be a page for art, it is lonely and I feel like nobody can get to know me, like, at all. It sucks. I feel kind of like a mascot or something sometimes, I wish I knew how to explain it. I don’t feel very authentic, or something, or like I can be myself safely (especially with how it feels like the whole world is on there). I created this in hopes there was other people like me, that felt like me, or were just even interested for their own reasons…

Social media is to discussion what bumper-stickers are to philosophy. You see my signature.
