Anyone here a fellow retrogame collector? When how and why did you start? Do you stick to one console or span to several? What's your most valuable (sentimental or monetary value, your choice) piece? Do you have any interesting conversation starters in your collections? Do you do modding/customization or do you leave your stuff OG? I wanna hear about it all :3
For me, the Game Boy line has defined my childhood and it was only natural to get back to it as soon as extra funds became available. I started by looking for all the titles I had always wanted but couldn't purchase at the time of release (I'm really glad to have recovered all the Pokemon versions I was missing before their prices would blow out) then expanded to unknown territories. Lately I'm pretty fixated on getting anime tie-ins that never released outside of Japan.
This is my most recent group photo. XD I might have acquired a couple more carts after this. Whenever I'm not looking/playing I keep them stored in the painted wooden boxes shown, at least I keep everything tidy and the boxes themselves make up for pleasant home decorations. Not shown in the pic are all my accessories like external lights, link cables, printer and five GBCs.
My fav part about collecting old pieces such as these is when I come across games that have been clearly loved by their previous owner: I have a few carts that have names written on their back or even tiny stickers, it's like their telling a story of their own <3
I still tend to avoid "completely trashed" conditions and I'm not a fan of heavy modding (much more in favour of keeping the piece as original as it can be) but sometimes I do some light restoration; cleaning parts (a mandatory practice when it comes to objects that were most probably handled by kids xD), changing batteries, swapping scratched screens and so on. Probably the most "invasive" restoration I did was painting over the logo of a Pokemon edition GBC which had become almost faded.
And what do yoir collections look like? Pls share <3
