The way I came up with the idea for Jamie (my main fursona) came from me doing a bunch of really simple sketches in my sketchbook, trying to find a design I could easily and repeatedly draw with my VERY limited drawing ability Once I had a basic concept down, I did a bunch more sketches to refine more of the little details until I got him to a place I liked! I'd say the number one rule of designing a fursona is to just have fun with it! There's pretty much no rules when it comes to designing a fursona, so do whatever sounds cool to you! If your character is a self representation but you want them to wear a fantasy costume, go for it!

It’s entirely up to you! That’s one of the cool things about furry. You can make a backstory or get as detailed as you want, but you can also just do what you like. :3 I have a few sonas, and I’ve had many over the years that I no longer use or have changed. Usually mine are just… me. Or I’ll give one certain aspects of my personality, and another one other aspects.
I like your sona! I have a preference towards more simple designs though haha

aaa ive gone through quite a few fursonas with such wildly different ways of being formed, like my old manokit, baku, being me trying to draw someones sona from memory but going in the complete wrong direction. my current sona, kartna, featured in my pfp, was actually a trade adopt i had received! they were an old design that the og owner had been trying to get rid of. i had an idea for a possible rework and bam! ended up here. honestly didnt think id getting as attached to him as i thought- it sorta just happened!
when the attachment started, i began to insert aspects of myself, mainly personality and some clothing style choices ^^ this isnt really the best example, as kartna definitely wasnt made as a sona and simply became one. that kinda how it’s been for me for my most beloved sonas: made without the intent of being one
but honestly just have fun with it! anything is on the table really, which does make it seem like there is infinite things you could do. starting off simple, like what you did, and growing a character/sona from those basic principles is such a great place to start! if you wanna keep going with it, exploring your interests and parts of your personality to the character in some way are good ways to go about it
i do hope this makes some sense ^^’

... *discreetly hides the encyclopedia of lore behind various characters* We writers tend to go a little overboard, but that's hardly necessary. I think most of us start with a character that "is us", just with fur, but quickly progress from there to the us we want to be or wish could be... or are afraid might be (looking at my pfp as I say that). A lot of us have more than a few that we're just fond of, though. They're the us we'd like to be in a world we'd like to visit, or at least the friend we'd like to have if we could go there (Winnie-the-Pooh to our Christopher Robin, so to speak). Like the folks above have suggested: start simple, have fun with it, and add detail and flourishes as they strike your fancy. You'll probably be shocked at how fast you'll go from "a rat in a hat" to something so distinct it can't be mistaken for anyone but you and yours.

I totally tried to create my fursona by trying to meet them through lucid dreaming as I was originally trying to create a Dreamkeepers from David Lillie's comic XD. That didn't work too well, so then I sat down with a pencil and paper and started sketching things out. It took me long enough to figure out how to draw furry from drawing anime characters. With a bit of research I originally aimed at a red panda/artic fox, but eventually when I discovered fennecs my ears just kept getting slightly bigger until I realized... I wanna be a red panda/fennec and it's stuck ever since with only minor alterations to colors ect. until I found what I liked .
